Insulation can equally have a cooling effect by reducing the levels of heat that builds up inside your home during the hot summer months. Cavity wall insulation will normally cover its costs through decreased energy bills within 5 years. If your home was built after the 1920's, there is a strong possibility that it will have cavity walls (i.e. a gap between the inner and outer wall). The insulation process is relatively straightforward, the material (normally foam, polybeads or Rockwool ) is injected into the cavity through a series of holes that are drilled from the outside of the building. It will generally take less than a day and it is the least expensive method and creates the minimum amount of disruption.

There are several ways to insulate your loft or attic. Often people think of the traditional rolls of fibreglass insulation that are layed between the joists. However this is often not the best way as fibreglass is not as efficient at controlling heat loss as other more modern (and more green) materials.
Spray-on insulation on the roof is a good option to consider, especially if your use the attic or loft space on a regular basis. This is made of polyurethane foam which is pumped through pressurized spray nozzles and adheres to the walls or sides. As it does so it expands to form a continuous insulating barrier. It can also help with strengthening the grip positioning of roof tiles thus making them less likely to come off in a storm. It adheres to most materials including tile, slate, wood, concrete, metal and even cloth.
Blanket Insulation: Glass fibre, foil-backed felt, rock fibre or mineral fibre blanket insulation is available by roll. These rolls fit between the joists. This is probably the most common type of insulation but nor necessarily the cheapest or most efficient..
Sheet insulation: If you intend to use the attic area, you can insulate the sloping surfaces of the roof instead of the floor, although it's good idea to also insulate under the boarding on the joists too. Sheet insulation can also be fixed between the rafters.
